GOAT SALES AGREEMENT & POLICIES
At The Bad Habit Barn, the health, welfare, and future of the goats we produce are extremely important to us. We put a tremendous amount of time, planning, care, and expense into our herd and want every goat leaving our farm to go to a home prepared to provide appropriate lifelong care.
By placing a deposit, making payment, or purchasing a goat from The Bad Habit Barn, the purchaser acknowledges that they have read, understand, and agree to the following sales policies.
RESERVATIONS & DEPOSITS
A $50 deposit per animal is required to reserve any animal from The Bad Habit Barn.
Deposits are applied toward the total purchase price of the animal and are non-refundable if the purchaser changes their mind, is unable to take possession of the animal, finds another animal, or otherwise chooses not to complete the purchase.
An animal is not considered reserved until the deposit has been received.
If The Bad Habit Barn is unable to complete the sale through no fault of the purchaser, the deposit will be refunded or, with the purchaser’s agreement, may be transferred to another available animal.
The Bad Habit Barn reserves the right to retain any animal produced by our herd prior to accepting a deposit.
HORNED KIDS
Our kids are routinely disbudded unless other arrangements are made in advance.
If a purchaser specifically requests that a kid be left horned and not disbudded, the purchase price of that animal must be paid in full before the age at which we would normally disbud the kid.
Once a request to leave a kid horned has been made and full payment has been received, the entire purchase price is non-refundable.
This policy exists because choosing not to disbud a kid at the purchaser’s request permanently changes that animal and may significantly limit our ability to place the animal in another home should the purchaser later change their mind.
PAYMENT
Unless otherwise agreed upon in writing, the remaining purchase price must be paid in full before the animal leaves The Bad Habit Barn.
No animal will leave our possession until all amounts owed have been paid.
HERD HEALTH & BIOSECURITY TESTING
Maintaining a healthy herd is extremely important to us.
The Bad Habit Barn performs annual biosecurity testing for CAE, CL, Johne’s disease, and Q Fever.
Our herd is tested on a staggered schedule:
Bucks are tested in the fall.
Does are tested in the spring. Our herd has tested negative for CAE, CL, Johne’s disease, and Q Fever.
Current testing results are available to prospective and current purchasers upon request.
Biosecurity testing represents the health status of the animals tested at the time samples were collected. As with any biological testing, no breeder can guarantee that an animal will remain free of every disease or health condition throughout its lifetime.
We encourage purchasers to maintain appropriate biosecurity practices when introducing any new animal into their herd.
HEALTH AT TIME OF SALE
All animals are believed to be healthy at the time they leave The Bad Habit Barn unless a specific condition has been disclosed to the purchaser.
We will never knowingly sell an animal with an undisclosed significant health condition.
Goats are living animals, however, and we cannot guarantee that an animal will never become sick, injured, infertile, or develop a health condition after leaving our care.
The purchaser is welcome to arrange for a veterinary examination at their own expense prior to taking possession.
Once an animal leaves The Bad Habit Barn, responsibility for its health, management, housing, nutrition, biosecurity, veterinary care, and general welfare transfers to the purchaser.
PICKUP & TRANSPORTATION
Purchasers are responsible for arranging pickup or transportation unless otherwise agreed upon in writing.
If transportation is provided by a third party, selection and coordination of that transporter are the purchaser’s responsibility.
Once an animal leaves our possession, transportation expenses and risks associated with transportation become the responsibility of the purchaser.
Animals must be picked up within the agreed-upon timeframe. Animals remaining at The Bad Habit Barn beyond their scheduled pickup date may be subject to boarding charges.
REGISTRATION
When an animal is sold as registered or registerable, the appropriate registration paperwork will be provided or transferred according to the requirements of the applicable registry.
Unless otherwise stated, the purchaser is responsible for applicable transfer or registration fees.
Registration papers and pedigree information do not constitute a guarantee of future performance.
BREEDING ANIMALS
Animals sold as breeding stock are believed to be suitable for breeding based upon the information available to us at the time of sale.
Unless a specific guarantee is provided in writing for an individual animal, The Bad Habit Barn does not guarantee future fertility, conception rate, kidding outcome, number or sex of offspring, milk production, udder development, mature size, or reproductive lifespan.
Young animals can change significantly as they mature.
SHOW, APPRAISAL & PRODUCTION POTENTIAL
We carefully select breeding animals and make breeding decisions with specific goals in mind. However, genetic potential is not a guarantee of future performance.
The accomplishments, Linear Appraisal scores, milk records, show records, or other performance of parents and relatives do not guarantee that an individual animal will achieve the same results.
The Bad Habit Barn does not guarantee show placings, championships, appraisal scores, milk-test results, production levels, mature conformation, or reproductive performance.
Genetics matter, but so do management, nutrition, environment, health, maturity, and plain old Mother Nature.
PURCHASER RESPONSIBILITY
Purchasers are responsible for educating themselves about proper goat ownership and providing appropriate fencing, shelter, nutrition, minerals, companionship, veterinary care, parasite management, hoof care, and routine husbandry.
We are happy to share our experience and provide reasonable support to our purchasers. However, information or advice provided by The Bad Habit Barn is not a substitute for veterinary care.
Once an animal leaves our possession, the purchaser assumes responsibility for decisions regarding that animal’s management and care.
RIGHT OF FIRST REFUSAL
If at any point a purchaser can no longer keep an animal purchased directly from The Bad Habit Barn, we ask that they contact us before offering the animal elsewhere.
When a Right of First Refusal is specifically included in an individual animal’s purchase agreement, the purchaser must offer The Bad Habit Barn the opportunity to purchase the animal before selling or otherwise transferring ownership to another party.
A Right of First Refusal does not mean that The Bad Habit Barn is obligated to purchase or take back an animal.
Any animal-specific Right of First Refusal terms will be documented at the time of sale.
ANIMAL WELFARE & RIGHT TO REFUSE SALE
The Bad Habit Barn reserves the right to refuse or cancel a sale prior to completion if we believe the placement is not in the best interest of the animal.
We also reserve the right to refuse future sales to any individual at our discretion.
Our animals are not simply inventory. Appropriate placement and the welfare of the animals we produce take priority over completing a sale.
NO GUARANTEE OF RESALE VALUE
The Bad Habit Barn makes no guarantee regarding the future monetary or resale value of any animal.
Purchase price reflects our evaluation of the animal, its pedigree and genetics, accomplishments where applicable, and market conditions at the time of sale.
FINAL SALE
Unless otherwise specifically provided in writing, all sales are final once the purchaser takes possession of the animal.
The Bad Habit Barn is not responsible for veterinary expenses, transportation expenses, loss of income, loss of offspring, loss of show or breeding opportunities, or other expenses incurred after the animal leaves our possession.
COMMUNICATION
We want purchasers of The Bad Habit Barn animals to be successful.
If you have a concern about an animal purchased from us, please contact us directly. We cannot address a problem we do not know exists.
We are happy to answer reasonable questions and provide support based on our experience with the animal and our herd. Ultimately, ownership also means accepting responsibility for the day-to-day management decisions that affect an animal after it leaves our farm.
ACCEPTANCE OF THESE TERMS
Placement of a deposit, payment toward an animal, or completion of a purchase from The Bad Habit Barn constitutes acknowledgment that the purchaser has read, understands, and accepts these Sales Policies, along with any additional terms documented for the individual animal.
We strongly encourage prospective purchasers to read these policies completely and ask questions before placing a deposit or making payment.
